死ぬ

die: 「死ぬ」ことを意味する最も一般的な語だが, 日本語の「死ぬ」ほど語調は強くなく, 「亡くなる」に相当することもある

be dead: 「死んでいる」状態を表し, 直接的で衝撃的な響きがあり, 時に愛着･敬意を感じさせない言い方となる

be killed: 不慮の事故や戦争などで意に反して死ぬ場合はbe killedが普通で, dieに比べて被害性を含意する

decease: 法律用語や経歴説明として用いるが, 〘やや古〙 に響くことがある. 形容詞のdeceasedにはそのような響きはない

pass away, pass onは婉曲表現

depart: 〘かたい文〙 で好まれる婉曲表現で「逝く, 旅立つ, 逝去する」
