悲しみ

sadness: さまざまな程度の悲しみを表す一般的な語

sorrow: 喪失感や失望などによる長期にわたる深い悲しみ

grief: 不幸や災難などによる更にいたましい一時的な激しい苦痛をいう

distress: 悲しみ･心配･恐怖などによる精神的な悩みや肉体的な苦痛

SORROW, GRIEF, ANGUISH, WOE, REGRET mean distress of mind.

SORROW implies a sense of loss or a sense of guilt and remorse.

e.g. a family united in sorrow upon the patriarch's death

GRIEF implies poignant sorrow for an immediate cause.

e.g. the inexpressible grief of the bereaved parents

ANGUISH suggests torturing grief or dread.

e.g. the anguish felt by the parents of the kidnapped child

WOE is deep or inconsolable grief or misery.

e.g. cries of woe echoed throughout the bombed city

REGRET implies pain caused by deep disappointment, fruitless longing, or unavailing remorse.

e.g. nagging regret for missed opportunities

SORROW, GRIEF, and WOE mean a feeling of great sadness.

SORROW is used for a feeling that something has been lost and often feelings of guilt and regret.

e.g. He expressed sorrow for having caused the accident.

GRIEF is used for a feeling of great sorrow usually for a particular reason.

e.g. She felt grief over the death of her pet.

WOE is used for a feeling of hopelessness and misery.

e.g. All my troubles left me in a state of woe.
