におい

smell: 「におい」を表す最も意味の広い語で, 芳香にも悪臭にも用いられるが, 修飾語を伴わない時は悪臭をいう場合が多い

scent: 花･植物などの心地よい香りや, 人･動物などの残すかすかなにおいのことをいい, 後者はしばしば訓練犬がその後を追う場面で用いられる

odor: 〘ややかたく･主に書〙 で, 他と区別できる独特なにおいをいうが, 主に強く不快なにおいをさし, しばしばそのにおいの発生源を意識する

aroma: 〘かたく〙 で, 比較的強い香りで, 食べ物･コーヒーなどの食欲をそそるにおい

fragrance: 花･植物･果物などの甘い香りの他, 香水などの人工のにおいをさす

stink: 〘くだけて〙 で, 鼻をつくような強く不快なにおいをいう
