見つける

find: 偶然によって, あるいは意図して人・物などを見つけること. 時に find out の形で用い, 真相・実態などの解明を含意する

discover: 重要性の高い未知の事実・場所・事柄などを新たに発見すること

detect: 組織的・体系的調査によって, 秘匿された物や見つけにくい物を発見すること

discover or identify the presence or existence of: ~の存在、実在を発見する、確認する

e.g. cancer may soon be detected in its earliest stages.: がんはその最早期にすぐに検知できるかもしれない。

discern (something intangible or barely perceptible): (つかみどころのない、かろうじて見えるものを)とらえる

e.g. Paul detected a faint note of weariness in his father's voice.: ポールは彼の父親の声の疲労のかすかな声色を見抜いた。

discover or investigate (a crime or its perpetrators): (犯罪やその犯人を)発見する、捜査する

e.g. the public can help the police to detect crime.: 大衆は警察が犯罪を捜査するのを手伝うことができた。

late Middle English: from Latin detect- ‘uncovered’, from the verb detegere, from de- (expressing reversal) + tegere ‘to cover’. The original senses were ‘uncover, expose’ and ‘give someone away’, later ‘expose the real or hidden nature of’; hence the current (partly influenced by detective).
