慣習

habit: 主に個人による無意識的な慣習･癖をいう. しばしばやめ難いことを暗示し, 否定的文脈で用いられることも多い

custom: 長期にわたる社会的･文化的な慣習･慣例をさし, しばしば具体的な国･地域･集団を表す形容詞と用いられる

practice: 〘ややかたく〙 で, 何らかの理由で習慣的に行っていること. 仕事や社会的･宗教的な事柄について用いられることが多いが, customと違って自由意思で選択可能

convention: 広く受け入れられ従ってきた作法や芸術･文学における伝統的技法をいう

ritual: 定期的で毎回同じように行われることで, しばしば特に理由を意識せず長期にわたって続けられてきたこと

rule: そうするのが賢明と考え行っている習慣

会合

meeting: あらゆる会合を表す最も一般的な語で, あることを議論し決めるために集まること

conference: 専門的で重要なことを扱う大規模で公式の会議をいい, 通例数日間続く. 講演会などを伴う場合もある

gathering: 〘くだけて〙 のget-togetherは家族や友人が集まって親交を深めるの懇親会, 特定の目的を持った人々の社交的催しや共通の関心事についての交流会などをいう

assembly: 〘ややかたく〙 で, 特定の目的を持った人々が重要事項を議論するための会で, 学校の朝礼や宗教的集会も含まれる

convention: 特定の職業, 政党, ファンクラブ, その他の団体など, 共通の関心をもつ人の大規模で公式の会議をいう

2. an agreement between countries covering particular matters, especially one less formal than a treaty:

e.g. the convention, signed by the six states bordering on the Black Sea, aims to prevent further pollution.

3. a large meeting or conference, especially of members of a political party or a particular profession:

e.g. a convention of retail merchants.

North American (in the US) an assembly of the delegates of a political party to select candidates for office.

a body set up by agreement to deal with a particular issue:

e.g. the convention is a UN body responsible for the regulation of sea dumping.

historical an organized meeting of enthusiasts for a television program, movie, or literary genre:

e.g. a Star Trek convention.

4. Bridge an artificial bid by which a bidder tries to convey specific information about the hand to their partner.

late Middle English (in convention (sense 3)): via Old French from Latin conventio(n-) ‘meeting, covenant’, from the verb convenire (see convene). convention (sense 1) dates from the late 18th century.
