奇妙な

strange: 普通ではない奇妙な状態をいう最も一般的な語で, 説明･理解しがたいほどに奇妙であることをいい, 時に驚き･不思議さ･恐怖を暗示する

odd: 〘主に話〙 で, 通常や期待と違って, また, 周囲から逸脱して, 驚き･心配を伴うほどに少し奇妙なことをいう

weird: 〘くだけて〙 で, 通常とは違っており理解･説明しがたいほどかなり奇妙なことをいう. strangeより強意的で, 〘話〙 ではしばしば〘けなして〙 用いられる

funny: 〘ややくだけて･主に話〙 で, strangeとほぼ同様に用いるが, strangeが時にもつ恐怖の暗示はない

curious: 〘ややかたく･主に書〙 で, 通常とは違って奇妙なことをいうが, この意では事に用い, 人に用いると「好奇心のある」の意となるので注意

peculiar: 〘米〙 では〘ややかたく〙 響くが, 通常と違ったり, なじみがないため, 愉快さや不快･心配を伴うほどにわずかに奇妙な場合に用いる

WEIRD, EERIE, UNCANNY mean mysteriously strange or fantastic.

WEIRD may imply an unearthly or supernatural strangeness or it may stress queerness or oddness.

e.g. weird creatures from another world

EERIE suggests an uneasy or fearful consciousness that mysterious and malign powers are at work.

e.g. an eerie calm preceded the bombing raid

UNCANNY implies disquieting strangeness or mysteriousness.

e.g. an uncanny resemblance between total strangers

suggesting something supernatural; uncanny:

Old English wyrd‘destiny’, of Germanic origin. The adjective (late Middle English) originally meant ‘having the power to control destiny’, and was used especially in the Weird Sisters, originally referring to the Fates, later the witches in Shakespeare's Macbeth; the latter use gave rise to the sense ‘unearthly’ (early 19th century).
