go (or cause to go) back in the direction in which one has come:

引き返す, 戻る (!比喩的な意味でも用いる) ; 元に戻る, 方針を変える; A〈人〉を引き返させる, A〈物〉を戻す

e.g. they turned back before reaching the church.
